Chapter Seven

Tre was going out of his mind. Dennis was missing again, only this time the man hadn’t been kidnapped. He had run away. Tre refused to deal with the agony even thinking about his mate running from him caused him. The ache in his chest came from not having his mate nearby.

“We’ll find him, Tre.”

Tre glanced at Nyle. “Do you know why he ran?”

Nyle thrust a hand through his thick locks of brown hair. “All I can think is that he didn’t want me here. He didn’t run until I showed up.” Nyle’s hard swallow was audible. “Maybe I should just leave and let him be.”

“No.” Tre knew more than most what denying a mate could do to someone. “My brother Sawney didn’t claim his mate for over six years. It almost killed Ricky.”

Nyle’s expression was both shocked and horrified. “Why would he do that?”

“At the time, it was for Ricky’s safety, but after a while, what Sawney was trying to save Ricky from became more dangerous than not claiming him.”

“But he did claim him right?”

Tre nodded. “He did, but it was a pretty close thing. He almost lost Ricky.”

A pained expression crossed Nyle’s face, telling Tre that this was a lot harder on the man than he was letting on. “I don’t know what to do, Tre. My mind is telling me that Dennis is better off without me, but my heart says to grab the man and never let go.”

Tre would be lying if he said not being a part of that statement didn’t affect him, because it did. He was as much Nyle’s mate as Dennis was, and his name wasn’t even mentioned. He wasn’t sure if what he was feeling was jealousy or disappointment.

“I don’t know that I have an answer for you, Nyle. I know that I could never leave my mate, but I’m not you.” I’m just your mate, Tre thought silently to himself. He wanted to yell at the man not to leave him. He was just as important as Dennis.

When Nyle frowned at him, Tre shrugged. “This is a decision you have to make on your own.”

“You’re the alpha,” Nyle stated with a touch of aggression in his voice. “I thought you were supposed to be a font of information and advice or some such shit.”

“Ha!” Tre couldn’t hold back his laughter. “Dude, I’m just as lost as the rest of you. I’m just able to hide it better.”

“Not the answer was hoping for, Tre.”

“You want an answer?” Tre’s hold on his temper snapped like a dry twig. He grabbed Nyle by his shirt, swung him around, and slammed him into the closest wall, which happened to be the side of the house. “In all of your soul searching about whether to claim Dennis or not, you forgot one very important thing, Nyle.”

Nyle’s eyes were huge on his face. “W–what?”

“I’m just as much your mate as Dennis is. When you decide to leave, you’re not just leaving Dennis. You’re leaving me as well.
